Our Story

Katie, founder of key

I’m Katie, the mum of three boys behind From Mummy to Ultra and the person behind key.

I started sharing my journey into ultrarunning while trying to find space for something that was mine alongside family life. Before my first ultra, 70 miles felt almost impossible. I wore temporary tattoos with words I wanted to remember when things got hard. As the miles went on, I kept looking down at them. They helped me take the next step, then the next, and go further than I thought I could.

That was the beginning of key: words you can carry. Small reminders that can meet you where you are, whether you’re standing on a start line, finding your way back to movement, or getting through an ordinary day that asks a lot of you.

My boys are a huge part of why I do this. They’ve taught me that there’s no single way to move through the world, and that feeling welcome matters. I want key to be a place where people can find something that feels like theirs — and feel that they belong, whatever their pace or starting point.

I called it key because sometimes the right words can open a door. They helped me see that I could go further than I thought. I hope you find words here that do something similar for you. The K in our logo has three parts, one for each of my boys.

I’m glad you’ve found us.
